Environment Education is an important component under Science activities at National Bal Bhavan. The objective of the environmental education section of the Bal Bhavan is to create awareness in children about the environmental hazards and find solutions for the same. It also aims at inculcating in children the feeling of love, concern and responsibility towards nature. Member children of National Bal Bhavan are engaged in different hands on activities in which they contribute in saving Environment. Nature walk and observation of things in their local surrounding is an important component. Children make groups and visit the National Bal Bhavan premises. They collect different flora and do discussion on them. They do planting and understand the importance of growing plants around us. They are also engaged in the activities of cleaning their surroundings. They also observe animal behavior at animal corner and fish corner. They learn to feed different animals at animal corner. Children learn different things about Environment and suggest ways of protecting the Environment. Children make different items made up of waste materials. They made photo frames, mats, folders, toys etc out of waste materials around them. Following are the areas on which students do work and they do discussions on them.

The Harit Vahini Movement was launched by the Lt. PM Mr. Rajiv Gandhi on November 19, 1985. Harit Vahini or Children’s Green Force is part of Bal Bhavan’s Environmental Programme. This Green Force not only spreads the message of environmental protection, but also motivates others by their acts. Collection of seeds, observing nature’s minutia, bird watching, scientific explanations of natural phenomena, creative writing, painting, poster making, environmental marches/rallies, lectures by guest scientists, film shows on environment, visits to the National Museum of Natural History, Delhi ridge, biodiversity parks, energy parks, zoological park, local ponds and rivers, tree plantations and environmental campaigns are some of the activities of this section. Children are also taken for trekking and camping related to environmental studies. The Jawahar Bal Bhavan at village Mandi and fifty-two Bal Kendras have been actively involved in spreading the message of environmental awareness.

 
 

The philosophy behind all these activities is to provide a congenial atmosphere to the children to explore the environment and use low cost environment-friendly material for various practical purposes. Folk are activity, for instance, helps children to explore the various styles and materials used by rural and tribal people for creating art around them. Folk painting like the Madhubani makes use of materials from nature like extraction of colours from flowers and other plant extracts for painting. Creative writing in the library also includes writing poems, essays and stories on environment. The photography section teaches nature photography as part of its curriculum.

This section opens up various facets of learning and methods of understanding environment through creative and scientific activities in class and also in the field. All resource material and visits under the activities of this section are financed by the National Bal Bhavan. Activities for primary, middle and secondary level children include the following:

• Coloring of the drawings of insects and animals.
• Drawing animals and plants using alphanumeric characters.
• Surveys conducted during field visits and special workshops.
• Special research based projects are given to children on a certain theme during the National Young Environmentalists’ Conference. This conference is conducted each year on a certain theme and children are taken to a theme specific locale, where interactive sessions with experts are conducted. As part of this, children do extensive study on the given theme by collecting information from different NGOs, GOs, through internet and then present their projects during the conference. National Bal Bhavan has recently started publishing the compilation of these projects in book forms. The Book on Birds ‘Vihangam Drishti’ is a compilation of articles by the State Bal Bhavan children. The book was released during the World Environment Day on June 5, 2006. Another compilation of best painted posters and banners by the State Bal Bhavan children titled ‘ Prakriti Ke Liye Hamari Guhar’ was also released during the Earth Day programme.
• Local and National level programmes for painting posters & banners and slogan writing are also organized. The Earth Day posters and banners produced children at the national level in 2007 have been exhibited in the museum of National Bal Bhavan.
• Ecopolice is a movement where children are encouraged to be young activists to keep a check on their local environment, habits to maintain cleanliness and health and understand social responsibility as a citizen of this earth. This year one child in each state was nominated as a field marshal during the International Children’s Assembly to keep a friendly watch on their groups to maintain cleanliness in the campus as well as during visits outside Bal Bhavan. National Bal Bhavan has also initiated a process to issue a Certificate of Good Habits to visiting schools, which leave the NBB campus clean after their picnics. Further policy changes are also being planned to create an active understanding among common people to develop good environment-friendly habits.
• Children are also encouraged to develop a nursery of their own and are taught how to grow plants by various procedures. They also take part in mass plantation and cleanup activities.
• National Bal Bhavan works in partnership with many NGOs and GOs. Some of these are CEMDE, TERI, CEE, Development Alternatives, Delhi State Environment Department, Ministry of Environment etc. Some noteworthy programmes have been The Biodiversity Project with CEE, Teachers’ training programme, installation of paper recycling unit, composting unit, rain water harvesting unit and waste plastic weaving unit in the NBB campus. The Ministry of Environment and Forests has supported many national level programmes organized by the National Bal Bhavan like the Young Environmentalists’ Conference, Earth Day programme, World Environment Day programmes etc. • Teachers coming in the N.T.R.C. are also told how and what to teach children at the primary level.

• Special workshops are organized during summer vacations on various themes like:

• Understanding insects, birds, mammals.
• Waste management and resource generation.
• Energy.
• Creativity and nature.
• Environmental problems and solving them by the process of divergent thinking.
• Quiz programmes.
• Nature study.

Environmental Education and related activities are going on all working days.

 

DIET Workshop on Integration of Environment with Language and Mathematics.

One day workshop for DIET students was also planned. The objective of the workshop was to understand the integration of Environment with language and mathematics. Student -teachers participated in a day long workshop and learnt different ways of integrating Environment with Language and Mathematics in their daily classroom activities. They also prepared some lost-cost and no-cost teaching aids using resources from their surrounding only.

 

Paper recycling activity

Paper recycling activity was done on 2.9.16 at how and why section of National Bal Bhavan. NBB children and staff members participated in great numbers to attend this activity. They learnt how a paper is molded into pulp and then how it is compressed to make a sheet of paper. Children themselves make paper in the supervision of the instructors.

 

Compost Making

Compost making was another activity done at NBB campus on 6.9.16. NBB children and staff members make compost in an open area near physical education section of NBB. Children and staff members collected dry leaves, flowers, twigs, vegetable peels, seeds and peels of fruits, leftover food and throw it in a dig prepared for making compost.

 

Paper Mache

Two day workshop of Paper Mache was held at Environment Education section of National Bal Bhavan. Children used the paper pulp which they made through paper recycling done a week before. They made different objects out of paper mache. The objective of activity was to enhance their creative potentials. Children used their imaginations and creativity to form different things. They understand the importance of reusing the things and the need of saving the importance resources of the Earth.

 

Ozone Day Celebration

On 16th of September 2016 ‘International Day for preservation of Ozone layer’ was celebrated in the premises of National Bal Bhavan. Member children of National Bal Bhavan celebrated this day by participating in poster making activity. Children also watched the documentaries based on preservation of Ozone layer. Later a group discussion was also held among the children to discuss the importance of Ozone layer and ways of its preservation.

 

Identification of common Butterflies of Delhi

Member children of NBB participated in identification of local butterflies of Delhi. Children watched documentaries on life cycle of a butterfly. They draw lifecycle of a butterfly and understand its different parts. They choose one butterfly and they made a mask of it and learn few lines on each butterfly.

 

Seasons of Delhi

Activity with member children on seasons was also done. Children watched documentaries on different seasons of India. They made a drawing of different seasons and food we like to eat in that season. They did discussions about their favourite season and explain what they like to do in that season.

 

Celebration of World Food Day

On 14th and 15th October world Food day was celebrated at Environment section of NBB. Member children of NBB participated in different activities related to food day. They did discussion on importance of food, sources of food and importance of saving food. Children draw their favourite food item and discuss their sources and ways of saving food.

 

Animals and their Habitat week

Children celebrated animals and their habitat week. They discuss about different animals and their habitat. They also discuss eating habits of different animals. They made mask of their favorite animals and enact like those animals. They speak lines on different animals. They also made book marks on save animals. Children visited animals at animal corner of NBB. They observe different animals and observe their behavior. They learn to feed the animals and also draw their habitat in their notebooks.

 

Water world Activity

Children visited aquarium of NBB and observe different fishes and note down their basic features in their notebooks. They also draw their favourite fish and learn few lines about it. They understand the processing of breathing in fishes.

 

 

Book marks making

In the month of November, NBB member children make book marks of different animals under the theme ‘Save Animals’. They made book marks out of waste materials and also wrote messages on their book marks. Children also understood the use and need of a book mark while reading.

 

 

Solar cooking activity with Nav Shakti School

Nav Shakti School children did a solar cooker activity in November, where children understood the concept of solar energy by cooking food in solar cooker.

 

Resident birds of Delhi

NBB member children identified different birds in their surroundings under the name ‘Resident Birds of Delhi’. The activity was done in the month of December 2016.They initially started bird watching in the NBB ground and also outside NBB. Children’s daily observations and discussions were really helpful for their understanding about different birds. They identified the food habits and habitat of different birds. They observed the body structure, shape and length of wings and sounds of birds in different situations.

 

Solar cooker activity with NBB children

NBB children performed solar cooker activity in the month of January under the supervision of the instructor. Children were first explained about concept of solar energy by simple day to day activities. They cooked rice and kheer in solar cooker on two different days. Later they distributed the cooked food among themselves. They had a discussion too on why there is a need of using solar energy and how this form of energy is better than other sources of energy.

 

Herbarium making

NBB member children did an activity of Herbarium Making. Initially they were told about the meaning and concept of a Herbarium. Children were shown few samples of herbariums and they are helpful in understanding plants. Children visited NBB campus and collected different leaves and pasted them in the old news papers with proper labeling. They wrote the names, date and location from where they had picked up that leaf.

 

DIET Rajender Nagar Visit

Three days workshop of Environment Education was conducted at Environment and Aquarium Sections of NBB. The workshop was for teacher trainees. Where they learned about need of Environment Education in schools and in our daily lives. Students performed different activities which were planned earlier. They also understood the integration of Environment with different subjects through activities.

 

Workshop for School Children

Students of Govt. Co-Ed Sr. Sec. School Sector-15 Rohini New Delhi visited NBB for three days workshop in the month of February 2017, where they had workshop on best out of waste. They learned to make use of waste sheets and old newspaper by making many things like paper bag ,mats etc. They also learned how to recycle the waste sheets of paper in a recycle machine and how to make a new sheet of paper. They also used the paper pulp and made paper mashie objects on their own under the guidance of Instructor.

 

Fun Games

Fun games of both Environment and Aquarium& Animal Corner section was held on 10th and 11th February 2017 inside NBB campus. The participant school was Govt. Co-Ed Sr. Sec. School Sector-15 Rohini New Delhi. Near about 30 different children participated on both the days. On both days they experienced two different games of both aquarium and environment.

 

Role play by NBB children

NBB children enacted a role play activity on save trees on 15th February 2017. They started with different roles of different parts of a plant and spoke few lines about each part. After that they recite a poem one by one about save trees and how trees are our true friends.
